The Family Tree

Posted 8 years 248 days ago ago by Danielle Streed

Many families have that we call "dead-end families", meaning that there are very few extended family members. The parents maybe an only child with no siblings, those parents may only have one child and that child may not have produced any grandchildren. When it comes to estate planning is important to consider your contingent beneficiaries. What if your child predeceases you and there are no grandchildren to leave your money to? Who would you leave it to if there were no brothers, sisters, nieces or nephews? How far down the family tree do you want to go, as far as your cousins?

If you do not plan ahead and put your wishes in a Last Will and Testament or a Living Trust and your family is small, the State of Michigan has guidelines as to where your money will pass at the time of your death. You may have a charity or several charities you support now that you prefer over random family members you have little to no contact with.
